Urban Design

Urban design strives to achieve a multitude of ends simultaneously, ranging from the provision of housing and commercial space, the creation of a sense of place, and the conveyance of people and goods, to the health of the fiscal and physical environment. Urban design overlaps many fields, including architecture, landscape architecture, law, transportation planning, traffic engineering, neighborhood planning, even graphic design. It is therefore the art of relating one set of professional concerns to other sets.

Types of projects that require the skills of an urban designer include: bridges, viaducts, underpasses, tunnels, plazas, pedestrian malls, streetscapes, urban design plans, charrettes, redevelopment plans, zoning ordinances, design guidelines, intergovernmental agreements, neighborhood plans, transit, wayfinding or guide signs, and public art.
